As a high school junior, her mom volunteered her at a local dental office, and she began at the very bottom, cleaning floors and sterilizing instruments. Over the years that followed, she worked nearly every role in a dental practice before earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University College of Dentistry in 2008 and completing her hospital residency at Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx. That ground-up experience shaped how she leads today. She knows what every person on her team is responsible for because she has done their job herself.
After years of practicing conventional dentistry, Dr. Lam found herself searching for more. When her own children faced chronic health challenges, she began studying the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body, and the more she learned, the harder it became to keep practicing the way she had been trained. She joined the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine, pursued additional training, and eventually opened Essential Dental so she could practice the way she believed dentistry should be done. Her approach is conservative and honest. She preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible, uses mercury-free, fluoride-free, and BPA-free materials, and only recommends what is truly needed.

What should I do if a dentist told me I am not a candidate for dental implants?
Get a second opinion, because being told no usually means that office could not do the case, not that implants are impossible. Most of the time the reason is bone loss. When bone can be rebuilt, Dr. Assi rebuilds it, and when it cannot, there are implants that anchor into stronger bone above the jaw, including zygomatic, nasal and pterygoid options that few offices offer. A consultation and a 3D scan will give you a clear answer, and that consultation is complimentary.
How long does it take to get teeth after full-arch implant surgery?
For full-arch cases we deliver the teeth within twenty-four hours of surgery. You are not waiting months on an outside lab, because the case is planned and simulated digitally beforehand and the new teeth are designed, milled and printed in our own lab in zirconia. That means fixed, natural-looking teeth rather than a removable denture, and it is why Dr. Assi describes this work as changing lives one arch at a time.
What is a biological dentist, and how is it different from a regular dentist?
A biological dentist practices modern dentistry in the least toxic way available, with constant attention to how your mouth connects to the rest of your body. In this office that means concrete things: we test how your body responds to dental materials before placing anything permanent, we are mercury-free and fluoride-free and use BPA-free and gluten-free materials, we look for chronic problems hiding in the mouth such as an old extraction site that never healed, and we look at nutrition because your ability to heal depends on it. Dr. Maya's own view is that none of this should be an alternative. It should just be dentistry.
Can a problem in my mouth affect the rest of my body?
It can be connected, and it is worth investigating, though we will never promise you that treating your mouth resolves a medical condition. Infection and inflammation do not stay politely in one place, and airway problems affect how you sleep and how you feel. Many of our patients arrive already working with a functional medicine doctor and ask to have old root canals or extraction sites checked. We take that seriously and look properly, using 3D imaging, saliva biomarker testing and oral microbiome testing, then tell you honestly what we find and what we do not know.
Is it safe to have old mercury fillings removed?
How they come out is the part that matters, which is why we follow a strict removal protocol built specifically for it. Drilling an old metal filling releases vapor, so the SMART protocol adds isolation, constant suction, filtration and protection for you, for our team and for the room. Dr. Maya is certified to do it this way, which is a fair question to ask any office that offers it. We then restore the tooth with a BPA-free, biocompatible material milled here, and we can test which materials your body accepts most readily before we place anything.
Can I use my dental insurance if you are out of network?
Yes. We are out of network with all plans, and we file the paperwork for you so you can be reimbursed for whatever your plan allows. Being out of network is a deliberate choice: it means our recommendations follow what your mouth needs rather than a fee schedule, and it is what makes a two-hour first exam and one surgery patient a day possible. Financing is available through Cherry, Proceed, Alpheon and CareCredit, and you will know the full cost of your plan, in a room with us, before any work begins.
